CELEBRATIONS IN PERU! LOTS OF KNITTING TO BE DONE.

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Wow, it is very busy at Mayu! Holidays are just around the corner and our knitters (read more about them here) are working away in the Peruvian Andes. Unfortunately, the rainy season is approaching so no more afternoon knitting on the corner. The party has to move inside.

I recently got wind of these photos from the last celebration I had with the artisans, who are dancing away to Huayno music (I know, I know, I love Huayno — browse our blog for more Huayno entries) and knitting along. As soon as Christmas passes, they will surely be dancing again to celebrate the hard-work and money made knitting our beautiful alpaca hats, scarves, shawls, wraps, hoodies and throws! Thank you to our lovely customers.

FAMILY AND PRESERVATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT: THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME MAYU

My Host Sister, Mayu!

A few days ago, I was talking to a social media expert I met and she asked me “What does Mayu mean?” I responded quickly and told her it was explained on the About page of the www.shopmayu.com website, which I realized that most people probably don’t read. As a result, I’ve decided to give a quick explanation of the word Mayu, as it has become a common word in my daily life (and hopefully across the Internet, as people continue discovering Mayu!). BTW, please help spread the word by following us on Twitter, FB and by RSS feed.

Mayu is a Quechua word, which means ‘RIVER’. Never head of Quechua? It is the native language of the indigenous Incan Empire and the first language of Mayu’s knitters. Unfortunately, however, Quechua has been classified as a “dying language” as Spanish has been given greater priority. I chose to call this social enterprise Mayu, mostly because, throughout my Peace Corps service, it had a lot of significance. (more…)

What does Mayu mean?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Mayu means River in the Quechua language. The Quechua language is the native, indigenous language of Peru. The people also speak Spanish, which I learned to speak fluently while in Peru and continue to practice by spending time with Spanish-speaking individuals.

When I conducted a google search about mass produced alpaca products, none of the names I found appealed to me. They were very generic. One of my host’s daughters was named Marjorie, but the family called her Mayu. I always liked that name. Mayu simply fit as a business name because of my fondness for my host sister and the fact that it is unique, with Peruvian roots.
