WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2010

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Today is World Refugee Day, where we urge everyone to honor the spirit and courage of millions of refugees worldwide. As Kate Robertson, Mayu‘s founder, has worked with a refugee resettlement agency in the past, refugee issues are of a special importance to our organization. Refugees are people just like us. However, many people are unaware that tens of millions of people around the world have been forced to flee their homes in order to escape persecution or war. This year’s theme for World Refugee Day is “Home,” in recognition of the plight of more than 40 million uprooted people around the world. Some of the wonderful organizations that are doing so much to aid refugees globally are the UN Refugee Agency, Doctors Without Borders, Amnesty International, and the International Rescue Committee.

PHOTOBLOG: THE FACES BEHIND OUR ALPACA CLOTHING

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

At Mayu we believe that it is necessary to step back on occasion and remember that our mission exists solely for and by our Peruvian friends in the following photos. It is important to remind ourselves that Fair Trade is a people-centered philosophy that enables everyone involved in the process to change the way we think of “producing” and “consuming.” Fair Trade is about dignity, integrity, and wonderful people like those you will see in this slide show:

We would love for you to comment on your favorite photo, as well as what Fair Trade means to you! Share this slideshow with people like you, people to whom Fair Trade matters!

Remember to check back with Mayu on Twitter, Facebook and our blog for exciting news about sustainability, eco-fashion, fair trade, and hand-knit alpaca!

Meet Carmen, one of Mayu’s Alpaca Knitting Artisans!

Carmen Knitting

This photo is of Carmen knitting while her baby plays in a plastic wash tub! The freedom to work from home is important to our artisans as they are all mothers who desire to be with their children and families. They can earn a steady income by knitting Mayu’s one-of-a-kind alpaca products. Mayu not only supports artisans financially, but also supports this lifestyle and family culture.

Our artisans have many children although some of them are widowed, married and separated from their spouses. The extra income they make from Mayu helps them support their children in a variety of ways including school fees, new clothing and more nutritious food.

Please take note of the project Carmen is working on…the folds of fabric make me think that it could be a shawl or a fringed halfie. Too bad I don’t remember what she was working on at the time!

For more information on our artisans, check out the “Why Mayu?” video!
