WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY 2011

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Wow, it has been a while! I was busy working in Uganda on a project with Solar Sister, a social enterprise working to empower women through the sale of Solar Lamps. I bought my first Solar Lamp and was camping this past weekend. It sure did come in handy! Uganda was a fabulous experience and there were lots of rustic crafts that I imagined alongside Mayu’s hand-knit, eco-friendly, fair trade alpaca clothes and fair trade gifts. In fact, I picked up just a few, one of my favorite times to shop…

Now that I’m back in action, today is the perfect day to bring attention to Fair Trade as it is WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY!  80+ countries are celebrating and you should too! Besides buying yourself something special (ie: one of Mayu’s fair trade gifts such as alpaca scarves or alpaca throws), how about changing your habits? This year, the challenge is to incorporate Fair Trade into your daily breakfast routine. It is easy…

We’re not asking for big change,” said Paul Rice, President and CEO of Fair Trade USA,“ just small every day changes—switching a cup of coffee, a banana, a chocolate bar to one that’s Fair Trade Certified—to empower both consumers to make a difference and farmers to improve their lives and plan for a better future. It’s great to wake up every day and know that you’re part of a movement that has the power to change the world.”

PERUVIAN GRAINS & 2011 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS…

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

So it is now 2011 and I’m venturing to guess that most people out there have created some sort of New Year’s resolution dealing with food. Am I right? Here at Mayu, we love to promote all things Peru (besides our hand-knit alpaca accessories that can be purchased HERE)…

We’ve previously blogged about Peruvian foods and even provided you with some Peruvian recipes. However, I’m excited because I’ve just come across Zocalo Gourment, a company that imports Peruvian grains including Quinoa, Yuca and a whole bunch of others. If you don’t know, Quinoa is one of the healthiest (protein!) grains in the world and we are proud to say that it comes from the Andes Mountains, not far from Mayu’s artisans. Yup, they eat lots of Quinoa so they will have energy to knit our fair trade, alpaca accessories and winter fashion. Zocolo Gourmet also sells Kaniwa, another Peruvian superfood that I’ve just tried!

“Kañiwa (pronounced ka-nyi-wa) is a remarkably nutritious grain of the high Andes that has been described as helping to “sustain untold generations of Indians” in one of the world’s most difficult agricultural regions.

This species of goosefoot (flowering plant), similar to Quinoa, is grown in the Andes extreme highland environment where wheat, rye and corn grow unreliably or not at all. It is considered more resistant than any other grain crop to a combination of frost (the region where it is found frost occurs up to nine months of the year), drought, salt, and pests.

Kañiwa Grain is a protein powerhouse, providing a fully balanced meal when paired with vegetables. It has a wonderful crunchy texture and a satisfying earthy flavor that works well as a base for fish, in stir fries and soups, and even served cold in salads. It is especially tasty fried up as leftovers the next day!

Kañiwa Flour can be combined with other flours to make breads and desserts, added to soups and pudding, or made into a hot drink similar to hot chocolate. Due to its protein density and earthy flavor Kañiwa performs best when combined with other flours (either wheat or gluten-free) to make pancakes, muffins, breads and flatbreads, cookies, and other pastries.”

Next time you are looking for something new (and healthy) to spice up your cooking or baking, don’t forget Kaniwa Flour! Read about Zocalo’s responsible purchasing habits here. To happy and healthy eating in 2011!

PROTESTS INHIBIT THE ARRIVAL OF MAYU’S ALPACA SCARVES & GLOVES

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

I just got off the phone with Mayu’s artisans in Ancash, Peru. I was calling to check in about the upcoming trip to Lima to send Mayu’s alpaca scarves, hats, hoodies and throws. Christmas is just around the corner and we have some patient customers waiting for their holiday gifts. Unfortunately, our knitters are very worried right now as there are protests taking place as we speak.  The highway down to Lima is closed and there is no way to leave town. What does this mean? Eeek, our package is going to be delayed…

We are keeping our fingers crossed that it gets here on time. More importantly, however, this matter shows that there exists a lot of unrest in the area due to mining. A new gold mine has been discovered and community members are protesting the extraction of the materials by large mining companies. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this issue has arisen in the area.

STARTING AN ALPACA IMPORT BUSINESS

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

A couple months ago, after returning from Peru, I wrote the following guest post about the history of Mayu for a great website, Living in Peru. I thought I’d share…

Starting an alpaca export business in Peru

By Kate Robertson

As I write this, I’m laying in bed with my netbook under four alpaca blankets in a rural village in Ancash, Peru. The altitude here is 3,800 meters (12,464 feet) and because there is no heat, my hands are so cold that I can barely type. I’ve just finished a three-hour meeting  with Mayu’s artisans (during which we indulged in American pretzels and sweet, Peruvian pastries). I’m wondering why I’m not wearing a pair of alpaca gloves, the fingerless ones, so I can still type! I look forward to morning when I can bask in the warm sun and take in the magnificent view of the Cordillera Huayhuash.

STRAIGHT TO THE SOURCE: DRIVING TO OUR ALPACA ACCESSORIES!

Monday, November 1st, 2010

I know this video is novice and quite bumpy but, I really want to share it because it is part of the Mayu process which makes our fair trade alpaca accessories so special. I filmed during my last trip down to Peru. The view of this 30 KM stretch to visit Mayu’s artisans is absolutely stunning. The Cordillera Huayhuash, home to world class trekking, is in the background. Unfortunately, the music isn’t Huayno (watch us dancing Huayno), but it is still classic Peruvian!

Oh, how I love this drive. I took it many a times while in the Peace Corps and I never once got sick of the windy, rocky road.

UC SAN DIEGO, A FAIR TRADE UNIVERSITY!

Monday, September 13th, 2010

As a socially-conscious fashionista, you may have heard of a few recent campaigns to Fair Trade the White House and to Fair Trade Your Supermarket, but what about to Fair Trade Your University? Well, Mayu is THRILLED to announce that the University of California-San Diego is doing just that. As of July 2010, ALL of the coffee, tea, and sugar served on the San Diego campus is 100% Fair Trade. Which means that this is a milestone for the American Fair Trade movement, and truly shows the dedication of the student members of One Earth One Justice (OEOJ), the organization behind this campaign’s success.

Check out the Fair Trade Federation’s website and find out where you can buy your own supply of delicious Fair Trade chocolate, coffee, tea, sugar and other treats (which, like Mayu alpaca accessories, make lovely gifts)!

All of this news nicely corresponds with the recent announcement that Berkeley, CA & Boston, MA are the newest Fair Trade Towns! America now has Fair Trade Towns from coast to coast! Way to go, U.S.A.!

MEET HORFILA, ONE OF MAYU’S SKILLED KNITTERS

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Enjoy this profile of Horfila, one of Mayu’s most dedicated and talented artisans:

Working (very hard) for Mayu has helped Horfila to send three of her children to university, among other things. We at Mayu like to post these videos to give a real human face on the work that we are trying to accomplish. By receiving a fair wage for their labor, Mayu’s artisans are often the first generation of their families to be able to accomplish goals such as higher education.

DIA Y NOCHE: LA BELLEZA DE CHIQUIAN – HOME OF MAYU’S ARTISANS

Friday, August 20th, 2010

You will all learn Spanish now! Today’s title signifies, for those who don’t know, “Day & Night: The Beauty of Chiquian.” For those who can not travel to the Huayhuash mountains of Peru, we wanted to give you a glimpse of the view that our lovely artisans wake up and go to bed to every day…and night. This mountain chain, as well as being a favorite of trekkers worldwide, was also home to the known film Touching the Void.

While the daytime shot was taken by our own Kate Robertson, the dusk shot (found after the break) was taken by Peruvian photographer-in-training, Doris Loyaza,  wife of Mitch Teplitsky (film makers of Soy Andina) for the dusk photo. Doris and Mitch were in Peru with Kate and LOVED Chiquian…
