PROTESTS INHIBIT THE ARRIVAL OF MAYU’S ALPACA SCARVES & GLOVES

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

I just got off the phone with Mayu’s artisans in Ancash, Peru. I was calling to check in about the upcoming trip to Lima to send Mayu’s alpaca scarves, hats, hoodies and throws. Christmas is just around the corner and we have some patient customers waiting for their holiday gifts. Unfortunately, our knitters are very worried right now as there are protests taking place as we speak.  The highway down to Lima is closed and there is no way to leave town. What does this mean? Eeek, our package is going to be delayed…

We are keeping our fingers crossed that it gets here on time. More importantly, however, this matter shows that there exists a lot of unrest in the area due to mining. A new gold mine has been discovered and community members are protesting the extraction of the materials by large mining companies. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this issue has arisen in the area.

ONE WEEK UNTIL “SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY” — SHOP LOCAL ALPACA CLOTHING FROM MAYU

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Mayu recently learned about the first annual “Small Business Saturday” which was created to bring awareness to our country’s small businesses and local entrepreneurs. We LOVE this idea since we are indeed one of the small guys. Instead of the infamous black Friday, think about Small Business Saturday and start your holiday shopping right (and, don’t forget about Mayu’s hand-knit alpaca accessories). One-of-a-kind gifts from local small businesses are so much more meaningful than those from the mass-produced, big box retailers! Try it out this year & guaranteed you will be the best gift-giver in town. Buying for yourself is OK too. Everyone needs a couple of new winter fashion accessories. Hint, hint… hand-knit, one-of-a-kind, eco-friendly, fair trade alpaca hoodies, alpaca hats, alpaca scarves.

STARTING AN ALPACA IMPORT BUSINESS

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

A couple months ago, after returning from Peru, I wrote the following guest post about the history of Mayu for a great website, Living in Peru. I thought I’d share…

Starting an alpaca export business in Peru

By Kate Robertson

As I write this, I’m laying in bed with my netbook under four alpaca blankets in a rural village in Ancash, Peru. The altitude here is 3,800 meters (12,464 feet) and because there is no heat, my hands are so cold that I can barely type. I’ve just finished a three-hour meeting  with Mayu’s artisans (during which we indulged in American pretzels and sweet, Peruvian pastries). I’m wondering why I’m not wearing a pair of alpaca gloves, the fingerless ones, so I can still type! I look forward to morning when I can bask in the warm sun and take in the magnificent view of the Cordillera Huayhuash.

GIVEAWAY WINNER REVIEWS HER NEW ALPACA HOODIE!

Friday, October 8th, 2010
As some of you may know, Mayu hosted a giveaway last month and we had lots of entrants for our Rayas Hoodie. This super cute piece has 2 deep pockets, 2 sets of ties and an oversized hood. It has been a huge success in Mayu’s line and, well, we wanted to share our winner, Marta Lewis’s comments after receiving her hoodie:

“I was so excited to find out that I recently won a green alpaca hoodie on Mayu’s blog! I am so impressed with the handiwork and quality of the product. It is definitely going to be well-used this fall and winter!

I was able to witness the beginnings of Mayu when I was in the Peace Corps in Peru (Crazy coincidence that I WON). I am still in love with the
scarves and alpaca throw that I bought before Mayu was even developed. It has been four years since I left Peru and Mayu continues to create amazing products, while at the same time, supporting a group of talented women in a small Peruvian village. Mayu really exemplifies a collaborative effort that integrates friendship, business, and international artistic talent.

I am very proud of Mayu’s work. Every time I look at the website, it seems like there is a new, beautifully knit product available. I definitely plan to continue my support in the future. And hopefully I can convince my friends and family to support Mayu as well!”

Thank you, Marta! For your chance at a Mayu giveaway, don’t forget to subscribe to our Blog, sign up for our e-news at the footer of our site, find us on Twitter and Fan us on FB. That way, you won’t miss out!

ARE YOU A PAST CUSTOMER? REFER A FRIEND. RECEIVE A $25 GIFT CARD.

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

OK, so I admit, it is tough to sell Mayu’s beautiful alpaca accessories on an exclusively online basis. We know you want to feel the alpaca fiber, try the products on and well, SEE them! On the other hand, we know that when you swear to your friends about a certain product or brand, they usually trust you so they bite the bullet and make the purchase.

Therefore, we are asking you, a PAST CUSTOMER, to INSIST that your friends buy something from Mayu! If you were happy with your Mayu purchase, we know they will be happy too.

HERE’S HOW:

1. Tell your friend about our hand-knit, eco-friendly, fair trade alpaca clothing.

2. Your friend mentions your name in the comment box during checkout.

3. Mayu sends you a $25 gift card*

* Gift card is for use 1-time ONLY (unless, of course, you refer another friend)
* Gift card is to be used on full-price items ONLY
* Unfortunately, if your friend returns her Mayu purchase, you won’t receive your gift card

For questions, email info@shopmayu.com. And, if you haven’t taken our 20 second customer satisfaction survey, please do. We really appreciate your input!

We realize we’d be nowhere without our loyal customers so we are asking your help to help spread the Mayu word!

Enjoy,

Kate

UC SAN DIEGO, A FAIR TRADE UNIVERSITY!

Monday, September 13th, 2010

As a socially-conscious fashionista, you may have heard of a few recent campaigns to Fair Trade the White House and to Fair Trade Your Supermarket, but what about to Fair Trade Your University? Well, Mayu is THRILLED to announce that the University of California-San Diego is doing just that. As of July 2010, ALL of the coffee, tea, and sugar served on the San Diego campus is 100% Fair Trade. Which means that this is a milestone for the American Fair Trade movement, and truly shows the dedication of the student members of One Earth One Justice (OEOJ), the organization behind this campaign’s success.

Check out the Fair Trade Federation’s website and find out where you can buy your own supply of delicious Fair Trade chocolate, coffee, tea, sugar and other treats (which, like Mayu alpaca accessories, make lovely gifts)!

All of this news nicely corresponds with the recent announcement that Berkeley, CA & Boston, MA are the newest Fair Trade Towns! America now has Fair Trade Towns from coast to coast! Way to go, U.S.A.!

For more on Fair Trade, including our recent trip to the Futures Conference, stay tuned to our blog, Twitter, and Facebook!
