HOW FAIR IS FAIR TRADE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

The non-profit organization, Global Action Through Fashion (GATF), recently organized a panel to discuss the main challenges of Fair Trade in Fashion Businesses.  The organization argues that the Fair Trade concept is well established in the farming industry, but customers often do not understand the added value in the clothing business, which can be very complex, complicated and somewhat controversial. Moreover, the article states that consumers often lack knowledge and interest in the clothes making process…but, based on my experience I’d say that is changing pretty quickly! Learn about the clothes making process of Mayu’s Fair Trade, hand-knit, eco-friendly alpaca clothes here.

Another general Fair Trade challenge is the one of bureaucracy (eek!). Experts have found Fair Trade certification difficult for small businesses given the administrative burden of obtaining the label. Fair Trade USA admits, that automated part is often insignificant in small businesses, and obtaining a certificate thus relatively more complex.

MAYU’S ALPACA YARN: NATURALLY STRONG

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Mayu Customers have repeatedly prized us for great looking accessories that also have the distinctive characteristics as “cozy”, “warm” and “luxurious” (Read customer testimonials here). Beyond our lifestyle designs, handmade nature and overall coolness of our alpaca hats, scarves, hoodies and wraps, part of the credit should be given to the excellent material that Mayu’s artisans use – the alpaca fiber.

The Alpaca Research Foundation recently conducted a study on the properties of alpaca.  Fiber samples were taken from over 600 US alpacas, and compared to cashmere, wool and other materials. The results showed, without getting too technical, that compared to wool of similar fineness, alpaca was higher yielding, more heavily medullated (a distinctive feature of alpaca), longer, and therefore, considerably stronger.

Because of these positive properties, alpaca is an increasingly popular material for apparel and interior design and Mayu is proud to use the highest quality, 100% pure, eco-friendly, alpaca fiber in our hand-knit, fair trade winter fashion. Read more about the fiber here or experience it yourself by choosing some of our hand knitted, 100% Peruvian alpaca accessories (with free shipping till Valentine’s Day).

CELEBRATIONS IN PERU! LOTS OF KNITTING TO BE DONE.

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Wow, it is very busy at Mayu! Holidays are just around the corner and our knitters (read more about them here) are working away in the Peruvian Andes. Unfortunately, the rainy season is approaching so no more afternoon knitting on the corner. The party has to move inside.

I recently got wind of these photos from the last celebration I had with the artisans, who are dancing away to Huayno music (I know, I know, I love Huayno — browse our blog for more Huayno entries) and knitting along. As soon as Christmas passes, they will surely be dancing again to celebrate the hard-work and money made knitting our beautiful alpaca hats, scarves, shawls, wraps, hoodies and throws! Thank you to our lovely customers.

STARTING AN ALPACA IMPORT BUSINESS

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

A couple months ago, after returning from Peru, I wrote the following guest post about the history of Mayu for a great website, Living in Peru. I thought I’d share…

Starting an alpaca export business in Peru

By Kate Robertson

As I write this, I’m laying in bed with my netbook under four alpaca blankets in a rural village in Ancash, Peru. The altitude here is 3,800 meters (12,464 feet) and because there is no heat, my hands are so cold that I can barely type. I’ve just finished a three-hour meeting  with Mayu’s artisans (during which we indulged in American pretzels and sweet, Peruvian pastries). I’m wondering why I’m not wearing a pair of alpaca gloves, the fingerless ones, so I can still type! I look forward to morning when I can bask in the warm sun and take in the magnificent view of the Cordillera Huayhuash.

TRAVELS TO OUR BELOVED PERU

Kate Robertson, Mayu’s founder, just embarked on a two-week trip to Chiquian, Peru. Chiquian is the home of Mayu’s artisans, the collaborative of women who handcraft our fabulous alpaca accessories. Artisans like Mari , and  Elvira, are the lifeblood of Mayu and the reason for its existence. Kate had a wonderful time visiting these artisans with whom she spent over two years when volunteering in the Peace Corps , and the results were very gratifying. Kate did not get much free time, but when she did she spent it dancing huayno music and walking in the foothills of the Huayhash mountains.

It can be very challenging to operate an organization such as Mayu, which involves American designers and entrepreneurs as well as Peruvian artisans, but in the end our goal of making the world a little bit fairer makes all the effort worthwhile. Check our blog to READ, SEE and HEAR more about Kate’s trip to Peru!
