JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THE ALPACA CHULLO HAT!

Monday, December 27th, 2010

I know we always talk about Mayu’s alpaca chullo hat but that is because it deserves a lot of attention. In fact, our customers absolutely LOVE this hat and we can’t keep them on the shelves!  Read what  they have to say here.

Yesterday, I received a g-chat from a Mayu customer who I’d never directly spoken to.  Her exact words: “Hi Kate, I know this is random but I wanted to say Merry Christmas. I am wearing my new flap hat from Mayu in Montreal, Canada and I love it! I might have to buy my brother’s girlfriend one. She has hat envy.”

I wanted to quickly share some additional pictures of this alpaca hat because they are not on www.shopmayu.com. Enjoy!

ALPACA HOODIE SUPPORTS THE TRAILBLAZER FOUNDATION

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Mayu’s designer, Laddhavan Sutana, invited us to donate one of our super cute long alpaca hoodies for a silent auction she was attending.  Laddhavan’s sister is actively involved in the Trailblazer Foundation which works in Cambodia

The goal of the Trailblazer Foundation in Cambodia is the following:

By providing training and appropriate technology, we empower rural villagers to create self-sustaining programs.

Our focus includes water projects, school construction, and community development in order to foster healthy families, sufficient food, and sustainable incomes.

We were happy to be part of the silent auction and hope that somebody special is enjoying their hand-knit, fair trade alpaca hoodie from Mayu.

PERU, CHRISTMAS, PANETON & ALPACA CLOTHES

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

So it is almost Christmas and I’m guessing that Mayu’s knitters are getting nice and ready with their favorite Peruvian, Christmas Eve snack, Paneton (fruit cake) and hot chocolate. They might even drop the knitting needles attached to our hand-knit alpaca scarves, alpaca hats and alpaca shawls to enjoy the feast.

I remember my first month in the Peace Corps...
It was Christmas Eve and I won’t lie, I was feeling a bit lonely. I drank three glasses of hot chocolate, which was made from the freshest whole milk I’d ever tasted. Needless to say, my stomach regretted that move for three days. Ugh, bad news. Although it was delicious, I apparently wasn’t ready to take a step away from the skim milk I’d been drinking for years.

Paneton, pictured here, is the traditional fruit cake that is eaten every Christmas. Typically it has dried fruit (which I always pick around) but I prefer the cake with chocolate morsels. Yum! According to Living in Peru, the go-to-guide for expats living in Peru, these are the guidelines of choosing your perfect Paneton. And yes, you can buy Paneton here in the US. I suggest giving it a try! Did you know that Paneton tastes even better wrapped under your hand-knit, fair trade alpaca throw sold HERE?

SLIDE SHOW! PERU.

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

I was recently reading the Huffington Post and I came across a great little slide show of Peru, the land of Mayu’s hand-knit alpaca scarves, hats, shawls, wraps, throws and more! Our artisans come from the Ancash area, which is unfortunately not represented in these photos but you can read about it here.

“The South American country of Peru is an adventurer’s, gourmand’s and history buff’s dream. From the snow-capped peaks of the Andes to the deep jungles of the Amazon, arid deserts to rocky canyons, gorgeous churches to quaint colonial towns, the peerless Machu Picchu to the mysterious Nazca lines – not to mention the mouthwatering food and thriving nightlife of its spectacular cities – there is something for everyone in Peru.

These pictures don’t do justice to the incredible diversity and heritage of Peru; there are just a teaser. You need to see it with your own eyes!”

MAYU CUSTOMER SPEAKS: ALPACA HALFIE SCARF IS PHENOMENAL!

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

I know I’ve been blogging a lot lately about our fringed alpaca halfie. It is only with good reason — being the best alpaca scarf out there for all your Fall-Spring accessory needs, this alpaca scarf deserves the utmost attention.

In fact, Mayu recently had a customer who spoke so highly of her two new alpaca halfies that I just had to share her excitement.  The following quotes are directly taken from two e-mails that I received from Anni Hsia from Cambridge, MA:

“The halfies are PHENOMENAL, not that you didn’t know that! I mean, the Floral Scarf (ON SALE NOW) is too, it’s super super cute with the perfect length and feels awesome. The halfie’s just SO versatile and useful ALL the time in this weather. I feel a little like a nut being so excited, but I am really so pleased with these items. The great style and usefulness on top of the foundation of an excellent material, just like you describe on your website. The smoothness and sheen combined with durability and quality (unlike mass production cashmere, for example) is irresistible. I’ve not yet convinced myself to use any of my previous scarves since receiving these.”

A few days later Anni added the following comments:

“One of my friends is actually buying my black halfie from me, haha, even after previously deciding not to get one because it just looked SO cozy and ideally sized and useful on me. But I’m probably buying a couple more before the 9th; for others or for myself… Charcoal and cream weren’t there before! Won’t ignore the brown either :) Oh, also, Kate, your enthusiasm in your first e-mail response to me made it a very easy purchase. Both in confidence of the product, and in the sense that this was a good place to spend my money (on top of the Fair Trade stuff). I was happy to purchase from you.”

What are you waiting for? Buy a Mayu Alpaca Halfie NOW!

PROTESTS & MINING CONTRACTS IN ANCASH, PERU

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

A few days ago, I wrote a post about the protests and strikes currently taking place in Ancash, Peru. Unfortunately, Mayu’s artisans are stuck in Chiquian and are having a tough time getting to Lima to send our products. One of Mayu’s friends, Hilmer Reyes, is up in the region now and he was kind of enough to pass along these pictures –
One of Mayu’s knitters was about to walk four hours to the nearest functioning bus but we advised her against that…

The protests are a result of a new mining contract that is going to pollute Lake Conaccocha (about 40 minutes from Mayu’s knitters), which is an important source of water for the region.

PROTESTS INHIBIT THE ARRIVAL OF MAYU’S ALPACA SCARVES & GLOVES

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

I just got off the phone with Mayu’s artisans in Ancash, Peru. I was calling to check in about the upcoming trip to Lima to send Mayu’s alpaca scarves, hats, hoodies and throws. Christmas is just around the corner and we have some patient customers waiting for their holiday gifts. Unfortunately, our knitters are very worried right now as there are protests taking place as we speak.  The highway down to Lima is closed and there is no way to leave town. What does this mean? Eeek, our package is going to be delayed…

We are keeping our fingers crossed that it gets here on time. More importantly, however, this matter shows that there exists a lot of unrest in the area due to mining. A new gold mine has been discovered and community members are protesting the extraction of the materials by large mining companies. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this issue has arisen in the area.

THE KNITTING PROCESS IN PERU!

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Mayu has just added a new page to our site to further explain the production process of our alpaca accessories. The reason? We want our customers and potential shoppers to have the best understanding possible about how are alpaca scarves, hats, shawls, wraps and throws are knit. We know you can’t necessarily travel to Peru to pick up your alpaca ruffled scarf or alpaca hoodie, so we thought this was the next best option!

Check out the new page and start exploring the story behind our alpaca accessories HERE!
